At Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center in New York's Sullivan County Catskills, the Dave Matthews Band demonstrated why they are one of the better current pop/rock bands around on a lovely night. Some concertgoers were let down that they played mostly material from their newest release without some of their older favorites, but I found their new music enjoyable. The band's members showcased their ample talents on every tune they performed, whether it was new material or old. The band boasts exceptional musicians, with drummer Carter Beauford continually improving and becoming more tasteful. Guitarist Tim Reynolds consistently delivered amazing and subtle performances. One must admire and respect the band's high level of musicianship at every live show, regardless of personal music preferences. The live performances may not always match their studio recordings, but that overlooks the band's ability to bring fresh perspectives to older tunes during each show. The extended jams and musicianship displayed by the band are greatly appreciated by this musician, who is not a die-hard "DMB" fan but thoroughly enjoys their live shows. An outstanding and inspiring performance overall, highlighted by an extended, masterfully constructed improvisation by saxophonist Richard Coffin and Beauford during one of the tunes, replacing the deceased LeRoi Moore.
